A Life That Inspired A Mission - About The Kalei Foundation

Mission

The mission of The Kalei Foundation is to expand access to fine arts, farm-based, and sports experiences for individuals with special needs who have historically been excluded or underrepresented.

Through partnerships with service providers and mentorship of emerging programs, the Foundation connects youth and organizations to the resources, scholarships, and recognition needed to bring inclusive opportunities into their communities.

The Inspiration Behind The Kalei Foundation

My name is Kamilah Averyhart Terrell, and for the past three years, I have been searching for a meaningful way to honor my daughter Kalei’s memory. I now know that the answer lies in continuing the life she taught me to build around possibility, creativity, and access.

Kalei was born in 2009 at just 25 weeks, weighing only 1 pound and 6 ounces. She spent 173 days in the NICU, and I was there beside her every step of the way. When I had to leave, I recorded myself reading her stories so my voice could stay with her, bringing her comfort even in my absence. From the moment she came home, I made it my mission to turn every day into an adventure and every opportunity into an open door.

A Vision Born From Experience

As an adult, I had grown up immersed in the arts — ballet, tap, jazz, piano, theater, and band — and I carried that love into Kalei’s world. In her earliest years, she attended weekly physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Music soon became a bridge between her therapy and her joy, and through Kindermusik classes, she discovered a deep love for rhythm, movement, and expression. When she entered school, music therapy became part of her curriculum, and dance followed soon after.

Kalei’s curiosity expanded beyond the studio. Her love for animals led to a birthday celebration that included a small petting zoo and pony rides, which eventually opened the door to equestrian therapy. Swimming and tennis became part of her growing schedule, and together, we performed in multiple Nutcracker productions — moments that remain among my most treasured memories.

From Personal Journey to Public Mission

As Kalei entered middle school, I sought out a program that truly embraced inclusion. I found a school that offered specialized support alongside opportunities in art, dance, music, photography, and gardening. During the first two years, our world shifted online due to COVID, and I became known as “the dance mom,” standing beside her on camera as we practiced ballet and tap together from our living room.

When she finally returned to the stage in person, she stood front and center, completely in her element, and loving every moment of it.

Living in San Diego, California, I had access to a wide range of inclusive and therapeutic programs, supported in part by organizations like the San Diego Regional Center. Even then, parents were often required to conduct their own research to uncover opportunities beyond what was formally provided. Over time, I began to recognize a larger truth: what was accessible in some regions simply did not exist in others.

When I considered returning to the South, I found far fewer options both inside and outside of school systems. The same opportunities that had allowed Kalei to thrive were not readily available to many families. I also came to understand how costly, time-consuming, and logistically challenging these programs can be — barriers that place meaningful experiences out of reach for too many children.

Expanding Opportunity to Every Child

The Kalei Foundation was created to change that reality. Its purpose is to be a front line of access — connecting children with special needs to creative, physical, and therapeutic experiences they might otherwise never have the chance to explore.

Through scholarships and direct partnerships with service providers, the Foundation exists to ensure that possibility is not determined by location, income, or circumstance, but by curiosity, interest, and the simple right to experience joy.
